Preparing for Breast Augmentation Surgery
Breast augmentation cosmetic surgery is quite a customizable procedure that should be preceded by adequate preparation in order to achieve the desired results. An experienced cosmetic surgeon will prefer to invest maximum time in preparation so that there are no unexpected occurrences during the surgery or at the time of recovery, as far as possible.
Dr. Brian J. Parker is a plastic surgeon providing breast augmentation and other procedures to patients in Las Vegas and surrounding areas. During the initial consultation process, Dr. Parker will discuss various aspects of the breast implant plastic surgery, and help the patient make an informed decision.
Pre-op Breast Augmentation Consultation Process
The first goal of the cosmetic surgeon during the initial consultation will be to evaluate and determine whether the patient is a suitable candidate for breast augmentation. The surgeon will examine the general health condition of the patient, the previous breast surgeries, if any, and the basic medical history of the patient. If the patient suffers from any current medical condition that may pose a risk during or after the cosmetic surgery, the surgeon may first address that condition in consultation with a physician, if necessary.
If the patient has certain drug allergies, detailed information on that issue will be recorded. The patient will also have to provide forthright information regarding the use of tobacco, alcohol or drugs for her own safety, and allow the plastic surgeon to take the right steps prior to the surgery. If the patient has a family history of breast cancer, a more detailed breast exam may ensue, along with a review of existing mammograms or previous biopsies. Certain medications, vitamins or herbal supplements that the patient may be taking may be re-adjusted in consultation with the physician who prescribed them.
Implant Choice and Measurements
The plastic surgeon will take measurements of the breasts, and recommend the appropriate size and type of breast implants to match with the patient’s personal aesthetic goals and her overall personality. Dr. Parker will also closely consult with his patients in Las Vegas and other areas about the type and location of incision, and the placement position of implants. The choice of implant size, type, shape, texture, and profile will have a bearing on the final outcome of the procedure.
The surgeon will assess the skin quality and elasticity, and the placement of nipples and areolas. Photographs of the breasts will be taken for future analysis and to show the impact of post-surgical results. The surgeon will also discuss potential risks and complications, and show breast augmentation before and after pictures to ensure the patient has realistic expectations.
A blood test and few other tests may be ordered near the day of the surgery. The patient will be asked to quit smoking several weeks prior to the procedure. Aspirin and any anti-inflammatory medications will have to be stopped to minimize the risk of bleeding. The surgeon will prepare a detailed treatment plan, and also apprise the patient of steps to be taken for advance preparation for the recovery period.
